The Mixed Bag

Dozens of bean-shaped doodle characters stack up the frame in black marker on white, packed so tightly they spill off every edge. Some wear solid black hoods with letterbox eye slits, some sprout scruffy pine-needle hair or long fringes, one sticks out a carrot nose, and several grin through crooked teeth. No two faces repeat. The lines are wobbly and quick, with solid black fills used sparingly.

Pure black on white keeps it graphic and easy to place anywhere colour would fight. With the crowd spread evenly top to bottom, the eye wanders from one face to the next. At 9 × 18 in you can find new characters for weeks. It works in a kids' room, a studio or a corridor.
