No. 035, in ten platesKarateroo
Somewhere between a community hall and a nature documentary, kangaroos in karate gis square up for their grading.
Karateroo has the look of faded 35mm film: soft grain, sun-bleached skies, and the mustard, olive and eucalyptus tones of a family photo album from decades ago. Every frame plays it straight. Two kangaroos face off, one in a karate gi tied with a belt and one in nothing but its own fur, and the camera treats the bout with all the seriousness of a club newsletter.
The settings do half the comedy. There is a dojo with a wall clock and a spare gi on a hanger, a hall with timber wainscoting and fluorescent tubes, and a lounge room with net curtains and a split-system air conditioner. Outside, the bouts move to a grassy foreshore with apartment towers across the water, the gravel yard of a weatherboard clubhouse with a green tin roof, and a dry paddock under a lone gum. In one, a second student in a white gi watches from the sideline.
The indoor plates carry ceilings and windows at the top, so the clock sits over a light fitting or a pale wall and reads best in a darker colour. The two parkland plates are the gentlest Lock Screens, with an empty overcast sky across the upper third. The fighters stand in the middle of the frame, well clear of the dock, and the pale, low-contrast palette suits a light Home Screen more than dark mode.
It suits Australians abroad, martial arts students, and anyone who believes a phone should raise a smile on a Monday. The park bout below the hills is free to download in full resolution; the other nine plates are premium, unlocked individually for 10 credits each or together with a pxCream Unlimited subscription.
The kangaroo in the gi has the belt; the other one has the reach.

Tap any plate to hang it on the Lock Screen, then switch to the Home Screen to see it behind your apps. This is the same preview the app gives you, on your own phone, with your own clock.
Every plate here can be ordered as an unframed matte print, from A$59 with free shipping. Or hang three side by side: any three plates from Karateroo, 8 × 16 in each, for A$179.

How Karateroo wears.
Deadpan, nostalgic, absurd, sunny. Faded 35mm-style film photography, sized for every iPhone up to 2160 × 4800.
On the Lock Screen
Start with the free Park Bout: its pale overcast sky gives the clock a clean field above the two fighters.
On the Home Screen
The fighters stand mid-frame, so the dock lands on grass or floorboards; light mode keeps the faded look intact.
Full resolution, every model
Each plate is delivered at the exact size of your iPhone's screen, up to 2160 × 4800, so nothing is stretched or soft at the edges.

About Karateroo.
Can I try Karateroo before paying anything?
Yes. Park Bout, the sparring match below wooded hills, downloads free in full resolution. The other nine are premium: 10 credits unlocks a single plate for good, or pxCream Unlimited opens the whole set.
Do both kangaroos ever wear a gi?
Once. In Matching Gis, set in a dry paddock under a gum tree, both fighters are in tan uniforms; everywhere else one of them sticks to fur.
