No. 020, in ten platesVan Cats

The name is a wink, and the paint is the punchline. Every surface in Van Cats is built from thick, combed strokes that curl into clouds and coil into stars, a clear nod to Van Gogh's night skies. The cats themselves are faceted, almost cut from paper, in marmalade, cream and slate blue, set against deep teal, navy and the odd blaze of gold.

Ten plates, ten watchers. A caped cat stands upright like a small hero above golden fields. A ginger cat sits on a straw ledge with its back to us, studying a grey and blue storm. A calico cat surveys two pale moons and a row of cypress shapes, a slate-blue cat lounges in front of a wheat field, and the last plate turns into a tall, geometric statue of a cat with startling blue eyes against a black night spinning with stars.

This is a busy series, and honest about it: the brushwork runs to every edge. The upper part of most plates is sky, so the clock lands on swirling cloud rather than on a face, and the dark blue versions keep a white clock clear. Cream-coloured skies in plates like The Caped Cat are lighter, so a darker clock colour helps there. On the Home Screen the texture shows through between icons in the way an oil painting would, which works best with a tidy grid and few widgets.

It suits art lovers, cat owners and anyone who has wanted a starry night cat wallpaper with a little more fur in it. The Caped Cat and Watching the Storm are free in full resolution; the remaining eight are premium.
