Lantern Eyes

A cat's face fills the frame so closely that its ears are cropped away: slate blue fur above, a white muzzle below, and two huge red eyes with black slit pupils. A red nose sits at the left. Red goldfish with fanned tails swim through the scene, one across its forehead and others below. Swirls of ochre, cream and blue water curl around everything, cut in dense woodblock-style lines.

Slate blue, cream, ochre and red on a near-black ground. The eyes sit in the upper half, and the fish pull the eye downward through the curling water. Printed large, the fine line cutting in the fur and waves becomes the main pleasure. It suits a study, a hallway or a wall with Japanese prints.
