No. 098, in six platesCats and Carps
The cats stare, the carp swim straight past them, and nobody here is going to blink first.
Think of an old woodblock print redrawn with a very fine pen. Waves, fur and fins are all made from the same thousands of curling lines, so the cat's ruff seems to dissolve into foam and the foam into fish. Four inks do the work: dusky navy, muddy ochre, bone cream and a single shout of scarlet.
The cats are big, grey or navy and white, and nearly always red-eyed. In the opening plate a broad face fills the frame, eyes like lanterns, while goldfish drift past its cheeks. Elsewhere a longhaired cat is wrapped in red fins as if wearing them, a navy and white cat looks up as carp leap through cream breakers beneath it, and a grey tabby appears with a scarlet carp swimming right across its chin. The last plate pushes the cat to the top and lets a shoal of red and blue carp take over the lower half.
These are full-bleed patterns with no quiet sky, so be clear-eyed about the clock. In most plates a cat's forehead or eyes sit in the upper third, which means the time lands on fur and pattern; a bold, heavy clock font copes far better than a thin one. On the Home Screen the overall tone is dark and mid-grey, which keeps white labels readable, though a dimmed or blurred Home Screen setting lets the icons breathe. Treat it as a picture you look at rather than a backdrop you forget.
It belongs on the phone of anyone drawn to Japanese prints, dark cat art or a little menace with their morning coffee. Lantern Eyes and Robed in Fins are free to download in full resolution; the other four stares are premium.
Fur turns to foam, foam turns to fish, and the eyes stay red throughout.

About Cats and Carps.
Are the red eyes too spooky for an everyday wallpaper?
They are intense rather than horror. If you want the gentlest one, Leaping Carp has a calm, upward-looking cat and lots of cream foam.
Which plate leaves the most room for the clock?
The Shoal: the cat's eyes sit high, but the strongest red is in the fish below, so the busiest area falls under the time rather than behind it.
Do any Cats and Carps plates cost anything?
Four of them do. Lantern Eyes and Robed in Fins are free in full resolution, while the remaining four are premium at 10 credits apiece, re-downloadable forever, or included with Unlimited.
