Park Bout

On a mown park lawn, a bare kangaroo rises on its tail, forepaws raised, facing a second kangaroo in a loose tan gi tied with a black belt. The belted one has dropped into a wide fighting stance, one fist up by its ear. Gum trees and a soft blue ridge sit behind, and a green goal frame and play equipment are just visible at the far edge.

Washed olive grass, sandy fur, honey-coloured cotton and a pale overcast sky give it the faded look of an old holiday snapshot. The top half is mostly empty sky, so the standoff sits low and the eye drops straight to it. Played completely straight, it gets funnier at print size. Hang it somewhere people pass and pause.
