Cat. 041.1 · Landscape of Lines
The Arched Canal
From the bottom of the frame, a still canal runs straight through the centre arch of a pink brick bridge, with two smaller arches on either side. Tall bare poplars in gold and bronze crowd both banks, and rounded shrubs in coral, rust and crimson fill the gaps. Every surface is built from fine parallel lines, even the sky, which curls in rings like a fingerprint.
Teal water, raspberry brick, ochre trunks and a pale mint sky make an autumn palette with a slightly unreal glow. The canal pulls the eye up the tall format and through the arch to a hazy valley beyond. At 9 × 18 in the line work becomes the main pleasure. It suits a calm living room or a bedroom.
Pink reflections of the bridge piers stretch down through the teal water in long wavering bands. At the lower right, a curved timber fence holds back a bank of rust-red grass, and a crimson tussock fills the bottom left corner.
Hangs well a living room wall or above a bed
