Number 10 in the Birches

Coming out of a dusty hairpin, a turquoise Mercedes-Benz saloon with a white number 10 roundel on the bonnet slides towards the lower left, its three-pointed star grille filling the corner. Driver and co-driver show through the windscreen. Two more cars follow round the bend above, between white birch trunks, orange autumn foliage and a single dark fir. Loose ink lines and ochre washes give it a comic-cover feel.

Turquoise against burnt orange, ochre and pine green keeps it warm and nostalgic. The road zigzags up the tall frame, so the eye runs from the chrome grille back to the chasing pair and into the trees. A large print shows the scratchy hatching in the dust cloud. It belongs in a garage, a study or a car lover's den.
