Bright Channel

Seen from directly overhead, a narrow wooden boat slides down a channel of clear green water between enormous lily pads. A rower in a wide pale hat works two long oars at the stern, two passengers in yellow and red sit midway, and a round wooden tub rides at the bow. Red koi and one pale fish trail behind, and sunlight breaks into white flecks on the surface.

Lime, leaf green and dark bottle green, with red koi as the only warm notes. The channel runs the full height of the print, so the eye follows the fish down from the boat. Thick oil-paint strokes show clearly at 9 × 18 in. It brings summer into a bathroom, a dining nook or a sunroom.
