The Empty Frame

Pale, wind-rippled dunes roll across the lower third, and one long ridge carries a deep crimson shadow where you would expect grey. Above it, a thin black rectangle stands upright in the air, its lower edge disappearing behind the dune. Inside the outline there is only more of the same slate-teal sky. Fine stippled grain covers everything, so the sand reads like a printed tone.

Slate teal, mint-white sand and one patch of dark red make a cool, sparing palette. The empty outline sits dead centre of the tall frame, with open sky above it and ripples below. At 9 × 18 in the sand grain becomes visible. Hang it alone on a plain wall where its quiet strangeness has room.
