A tiny figure walking across pale dunes on a dark red ridge, a small red sun in a pale sage sky

No. 042, in seven platesInfra Dunes

Desert dunes seen in false colour, where every shadow burns red against a cold teal sky.

Infra Dunes borrows the look of infrared film. Sand turns a pale grey-white, combed with fine ripple lines, and the slopes that would normally fall into shadow are flooded with deep crimson. Overhead the sky is flat slate teal or pale sage, with no clouds to speak of. Two colours and a lot of air hold the seven plates together.

Crimson Cornice is the boldest: two tall dunes whose red lee faces curl over like breaking waves. Red Sun Walker puts a single tiny figure on a dark ridge under a small red sun. The Empty Frame adds a thin outlined rectangle hanging above the sand, a doorway with no door. Ribbed Hills and Contour Peaks lean towards drawing, their slopes described in fine parallel lines, the second ending in a dark red mountain. Split Horizon divides its dune field straight down the middle, red on one side and pale on the other.

The skies take the upper half or more and stay smooth, so the Lock Screen clock lands on even colour in every plate. The slate teal versions read well with white type; the pale sage skies of Crimson Cornice and Red Sun Walker are lighter and may want a darker clock. On the Home Screen the dunes sit low and the red gathers near the dock, which gives the bottom of the screen weight without crowding the icons.

It suits minimalists, desert lovers and anyone drawn to cold colour with one hot accent. The Empty Frame is free to download in full resolution. The other six are premium: unlock a single plate for 10 credits and re-download it whenever you like, or open the whole set with a pxCream Unlimited subscription.

About Infra Dunes.

Which Infra Dunes plate can I download free?

The Empty Frame, with its outlined rectangle floating over a crimson dune. The remaining six cost 10 credits each to unlock for good, or come included with pxCream Unlimited.

Why is the sand red?

It is a false-colour treatment in the spirit of infrared photography: sunlit slopes go pale and the shaded faces turn crimson, which is what makes the dunes read so sharply on a small screen.
