The Tallest Palm
One impossibly tall palm, drawn in quick black ink, rises up the middle of a sheet of cream paper. Its trunk is barely a pen stroke wide and stops just short of the ground, hanging over a small red Formula One car parked in side profile at the very bottom, driver in the cockpit. A tiny dark rock sits to the left. The rest is blank paper.
Cream, black and one hit of red make it light, sunny and wry. The joke is the scale: the eye starts at the fronds near the top and slides all the way down the trunk to find the car. At 9 × 18 in the empty paper becomes the point. It suits a narrow wall or a hallway.
The fronds carry a pale olive wash under the black ink, and fine hatching shades one side of the trunk. The ground is only a few broken pen dashes, and the car body shows a scratchy, hand-coloured red.
Hangs well a narrow wall or a hallway
