Ruled Straight

Four open-wheel race cars, three yellow and one red, are seen from behind as they run down a track made of long streaming stripes. The stripes, in red, mustard, cream and deep maroon, fan out toward a flat, low horizon. Above that line the sky is a solid ochre block. Each car is reduced to two inks, with dark shadows cut sharply under the wings and tyres.

Red, yellow and maroon only, so the heat comes off it in waves. The stripes start wide at the bottom and pinch toward the horizon in the top quarter, which pulls the eye forward like a slipstream. Flat colour stays clean at 9 × 18 in. It suits a garage, a games room or a racing fan's study.

At the far right of the horizon, a low maroon headland breaks the flat line. Thin black hairlines run inside each stripe like scratches in ink, and every car throws a short, hard shadow to its left.
