Whitewashed Door

Heavy with fruit and blue-green leaves, a lemon branch swings in from the upper right, over a whitewashed wall capped with a scalloped brown tile edge. Below sits a tall double door in cobalt blue, set in a stone surround above a pale step, with a small open shutter to its left. Fallen lemons lie on blue paving. Grainy, speckled flat colour gives it the look of a three-colour print.

Cobalt, chalky cream and lemon yellow, with dark teal leaves, make for a bright, relaxed summer mood. The fruit crowds the top right while the door anchors the bottom, so the eye drops diagonally through the frame. Printed large, the grain and the leaf shadows on the wall come forward. It brightens a kitchen or a breakfast nook.
