Aerial view of a narrow boat with passengers gliding down a clear channel between bright green lily pads and red koi

No. 063, in ten platesCarpe Diem

Seize the carp: ten small boats, a great many lily pads, and red fish that refuse to be caught.

The title is a pun, and the paintings are in on it. Every plate looks straight down on a pond so crowded with leaves that the water is just a scatter of gaps, and through those gaps swim flickers of red koi. The paint is thick and directional, laid on in strokes that follow the ribs of each leaf, and the greens run from acid lime to deep bottle. Red is the only warm note, apart from the occasional shirt.

In each plate a narrow wooden boat noses through the leaves with one, two or three people aboard. Sometimes they row, sometimes they lean on a pole, and in one they carry a hold full of orange fruit beneath a canopy of upturned lotus. The setting changes subtly from work to work: rimmed giant water platters with a slim yellow canoe and a whole swarm of red fish; a calm teal pond with sparse pads; a sheet of white reflected sky where the koi show up crisp; a dense carpet of small leaves with a strip of golden light along the top.

These are busy, edge-to-edge compositions, so the clock will sit over leaves rather than empty sky. The calmer plates, such as Teal Water and Bright Channel, give it the clearest ground. On the Home Screen the mid-green tones work in both light and dark mode, and the boat usually sits in the middle third, between the widgets and the dock.

A good fit for garden lovers, anglers with a sense of humour, and anyone who wants a green phone that still feels alive. Bright Channel and Two Rowers are free to download in full resolution; the other eight boats are premium.

The boats are small, the leaves are enormous, and the koi always win.

About Carpe Diem.

Which Carpe Diem plate is the darkest?

Golden Strip and Under the Lotus use the deepest bottle greens. Bright Channel and Big Red Fish are the most saturated and sunny.

Are there koi in every plate?

Red fish appear in all ten, though in Two Rowers they are mostly glimpses of rust between the leaves.

Do any of these cost money?

Most of the pond does. Bright Channel and Two Rowers are free in full resolution, while the other eight sit behind 10 credits apiece, kept for re-download forever, or are covered by Unlimited.
