No. 008, in six platesYellow and Hairy
Six shaggy yellow characters, all teeth and eyeballs, grinning out of the dark as if they know something you don't.
The look here is the puppet workshop: dense, slightly unkempt yellow fur, eyes like table-tennis balls, and smooth mouths lined with chunky white teeth. Each character is rendered against the same inky, blue-tinged black and lit from the front, so the fur glows at its fringes. Six characters, one recipe, and the recipe is mostly teeth.
Their dentistry tells them apart. The first has a gappy, crooked set and eyes pointing in slightly different directions. One shows full upper and lower rows and tips its head back in pure delight; another beams with small dark pupils and a grin that runs nearly ear to ear. A scruffy fellow has just two buck teeth beneath tiny eyes and fur that has given up on any styling. The squarest has blue irises and a wide denture smile, and the last is a tall, blocky type with one long fang and heavy, knowing eyelids.
Every plate puts the head in the middle or lower half of the screen, with a tall column of dark empty space above. That is ideal for the clock and Lock Screen widgets, which sit on near-black with the grin directly underneath. On a Home Screen the monster peers out between your icons: white labels are crisp over the dark top half and a little softer where they cross the yellow fur.
For people who want their phone to make them smile at seven in the morning, for fans of puppet shows, and for anyone whose favourite colour is unapologetically yellow. Gap-Toothed and Full Grin are free to download in full resolution; the other four monsters are premium.
Buck teeth, wonky eyes, and not a single bad day between them.
Try each one on before you save it.
Tap any plate to hang it on the Lock Screen, then switch to the Home Screen to see it behind your apps. This is the same preview the app gives you, on your own phone, with your own clock.
Every plate here can be ordered as an unframed matte print, from A$59 with free shipping. Or hang three side by side: any three plates from Yellow and Hairy, 8 × 16 in each, for A$179.

About Yellow and Hairy.
Are the Yellow and Hairy monsters too creepy for kids?
Not at all. They are closer to friendly puppets than monsters: big eyes, gappy teeth, and every one of them smiling. The one with a fang is as cheeky as it gets.
Which plate leaves the most room for the clock?
Blue Eyes and One Fang sit lowest in the frame, leaving the top half of the screen almost entirely dark.
