No. 093, in twelve platesA Yellow Cat World

Every cat here is drawn in scratchy brown pen, with fur built from short nervous strokes and shading laid on in thin washes. The backgrounds are single fields of yellow that drift from lemon mustard to dusty ochre, and the cats are tinted to match, so each plate is essentially one colour and a lot of personality.

That personality comes mostly from the eyes: huge, white and slightly alarmed. There are round, loaf-shaped cats sitting very still, a frizzy one that looks as if it has met a balloon, a wide-faced grinner whose head barely fits the frame, and a lean tabby with a bandaged paw raised in greeting. One small cat sits primly with its tail curled round to the front. And one character, long-snouted and wearing a yellow collar, gazes straight up and looks suspiciously like a dog who wandered in.

The composition does a phone a real favour. The animals sit low, often right on the bottom edge, which leaves two thirds of the screen as uninterrupted yellow. The clock gets a clean field, though on a background this light it reads best if you switch the time to a dark colour in the Lock Screen editor. On the Home Screen the cats tend to peek out from behind the dock, and dark-text widgets sit happily on the plain colour above.

Yellow lovers, cat owners and anyone who wants a phone that cheers them up a little will get the most out of it. The Little Loaf, Static Fur and The Odd One Out are free in full resolution, a gentle way to choose a favourite face before unlocking the other nine.
