No. 095, in eight plates8-Bit Formula One
One car, one yellow helmet and an ocean of cobalt: proof of how much empty blue a racing poster can carry.
Treat the title as a red herring: there isn't a jagged pixel in the room. 8-Bit Formula One is drawn in clean, hard-edged vector colour, the flat fills and crisp outlines of a screen-printed garage poster. What it shares with the cartridge era is the period. The car is a low, wedge-nosed single-seater in the style of the late 1980s, liveried in red and white, its driver in a bright yellow helmet, and every plate sets it against the same saturated cobalt.
The car is never shown whole, and that restraint is the series' trick. Cropped Cockpit pushes in until the sidepod lettering fills the bottom third and the visor sits just under the middle of the frame. Bottom Edge and Long Wheelbase run the car along the lower border in profile, as low as a skirting board. Head-On and Three-Quarter Front turn it toward you, the rear wing reading like a banner stretched behind the helmet. Cream Stripe is the oddball, a tall band of pale cream dropped down the left side as if a mount board had slipped in the frame.
As Lock Screen material it is about as generous as wallpaper gets. Roughly two thirds of each plate is uninterrupted blue, so the clock, the date and a row of widgets all float on clean colour while the car sits underneath like a signature. On the Home Screen that blue is mid-toned rather than dark, which keeps white labels crisp; the busy red-and-white bodywork lands around dock level, where a translucent dock softens it.
It will suit anyone who remembers the turbo-and-tobacco years, collectors of motorsport prints, and people who prefer one loud colour to a crowded photo. Bottom Edge and Side Profile are free at full resolution; the other six are premium. They are original illustrations, unconnected to any team, sponsor or driver.
Two thirds sky, one third racing car, and not a cloud in sight.

Tap any plate to hang it on the Lock Screen, then switch to the Home Screen to see it behind your apps. This is the same preview the app gives you, on your own phone, with your own clock.
Seven of these 8 plates can be ordered as an unframed matte print, from A$59 with free shipping. Or hang three side by side: any three plates from 8-Bit Formula One, 8 × 16 in each, for A$179.

About 8-Bit Formula One.
Is 8-Bit Formula One pixel art?
No. Despite the title, the plates are smooth vector illustrations with flat colour and clean outlines. If you are after blocky sprites, look elsewhere; if you want a late-80s racer in poster colours, you are in the right room.
Which plates leave the most room for widgets?
Long Wheelbase and Bottom Edge. The car occupies only the lowest strip, so everything above it is open blue.
Do any of the eight cost anything?
Two of them are free: Bottom Edge and Side Profile. The remaining six cost 10 credits apiece in the pxCream app, yours to re-download forever, or come bundled with Unlimited.
