No. 079, in eight platesRoarr
Not a single roar in sight: just eight crowds of big cats, staring back with perfect composure.
Roarr is pen and ink in the patient sense: manes built from hundreds of radiating lines, leopard coats stippled dot by dot, panthers filled in so solid that only their eyes and whiskers break through. There is no colour at all, only black, white and the greys that appear when lines crowd together. What unites the eight plates is the composition: big cats packed shoulder to shoulder from edge to edge, with barely a sliver of background showing.
Some plates are lion-heavy, maned heads stacked in rows, one mane rendered almost white and the next scratched dark. Others mix the cast: pale lionesses with long white necks, a spotted leopard tucked between them, a black panther staring out from the middle of the crowd. One plate pulls in close so a handful of lionesses fill the frame; another shrinks the scale and fits in a couple of dozen faces. Every expression is the same calm, faintly unimpressed stare.
With a pattern this dense, the clock will always sit over fur. The mid-grey values help: a white or a black clock both read, and the lighter plates, the close lionesses especially, offer a bright wall for dark widgets. On a Home Screen the texture is fine enough to fade behind icons rather than fight them, though white labels are clearest on the darker, panther-speckled plates.
For lovers of big cats, of pen drawing, and of monochrome phones that still give the eye something to do. Two Panthers and Pale Lionesses are free in full resolution; the other six are premium.
A class photo where nobody was told to smile.

About Roarr.
Is Roarr only lions?
Mostly, but not entirely. Lionesses, spotted leopards and black panthers turn up among the manes, which keeps the pattern from feeling repetitive.
Will a pattern this busy hide my apps?
The lines are fine and the tones mid-grey, so icons sit on top cleanly. For less texture behind them, Pale Lionesses has the largest, simplest shapes.
