Hummingbirds is drawn in the manner of hand-blocked chinoiserie, all fine engraved line and careful shading. The ground never changes: a deep, inky teal. Over it go leaves in burnished copper and bronze, blooms in cream and sea green, and birds whose throats flash rust and emerald. The restraint is the point. With so few colours in play, any plate could sit beside any other and look like a length cut from the same roll.

Some plates are busy with flight. One sends five hummingbirds darting through a fall of copper leaves; another hangs four of them, wings blurred to silver, among bronze foliage. Others slow right down. Two birds perch among white hydrangea and teal blossom, one high and one low; a single bird rests on a branch with a pale moon behind its head; another sits above a creamy open flower edged in teal leaves. The first plate keeps its bird small, half hidden among copper roses and two tiny butterflies.

These are all-over patterns rather than portraits with empty sky, so the clock will usually sit on foliage. The moonlit plate is the exception: its pale disc and the open teal around it give the time a quieter place to land. On a Home Screen the dark teal flatters white labels, and because nothing in the pattern depends on a single focal point, it survives a full grid of widgets without losing its charm.
