No. 061, in twelve platesColouring Dogs
Twelve puppies with enormous eyes and no colour at all, waiting for you to fill them in.
No ink is wasted on colour here. Each pup is modelled entirely in black contour lines that wrap around muzzles and paws like the grooves of a record, and the backgrounds are filled with mazes, zigzags and hatching in the same weight of line. The result looks like a page torn from a grown-up colouring book, hence the name, though nothing has been coloured yet.
The dogs are cartoon puppies with oversized heads, wet noses and eyes that are either huge and pleading or spun into spirals of confusion. A floppy-eared pup sits under a cloud of drifting question marks. A scruffy terrier cocks its head with one eye bigger than the other. One fluffy dog with spiral eyes grins with its paws up, a patchy pup wears a collar and a curly tail, and the last is a droopy hound, jaw open, looking thoroughly baffled by the whole arrangement.
Being black and white, the series behaves differently on light and dark screens. The faces usually fill the upper half, so the clock crosses foreheads and ears; a solid, heavy clock font helps against the linework. With white text a dark wallpaper tint or the Lock Screen's darkening options keep the time sharp. On the Home Screen the pattern runs behind every icon, so tinted or dark icons hold up best, and the monochrome sits neatly beside any widget colours you choose.
Dog people, fans of line art and anyone who wants a phone without a single bright colour will find plenty to like. Question Marks, The Scruffy Terrier and Worried Brow come free in full resolution, and the other nine puppies are premium.
Every line is in place. Only the colour is missing.
Try each one on before you save it.
Tap any plate to hang it on the Lock Screen, then switch to the Home Screen to see it behind your apps. This is the same preview the app gives you, on your own phone, with your own clock.
Every plate here can be ordered as an unframed matte print, from A$59 with free shipping. Or hang three side by side: any three plates from Colouring Dogs, 8 × 16 in each, for A$179.

About Colouring Dogs.
Can I actually colour in the Colouring Dogs pictures?
They are wallpapers rather than printable sheets, but the clean line art does open happily in drawing apps if you fancy adding your own colour for personal use.
Do the black and white dogs work in dark mode?
They do, especially with dark or tinted app icons, which sit crisply on the white and grey linework. The light grounds also suit a bright Home Screen.
What does the full set of twelve cost?
Three plates cost nothing: Question Marks, The Scruffy Terrier and Worried Brow. The other nine are 10 credits each in the pxCream app, re-downloadable forever, or the whole litter comes with an Unlimited subscription.
