A red-crowned crane rises with yellow and white wings raised high against a dark teal painted sky

No. 065, in fourteen platesBirds on Oil

Cranes, pelicans, flamingos and cockatoos caught at full stretch, all wearing the same borrowed yellow.

Each plate in Birds on Oil is a single bird painted against loose, blotted strokes of petrol blue, bottle green and night navy. The birds are rendered far more tightly than the ground behind them, feather by feather, so they seem to step forward off the canvas. The trick that unifies all fourteen: every species has been given wings of saturated canary yellow, whether nature agreed or not.

The cast is a gathering of long legs and big wingspans. Red-crowned cranes rise with wings thrown up like a dancer's arms; pelicans bank and brake, bills glowing gold; flamingos come in crimson, coral and one surprising all-yellow bird with black-tipped wings. Two sulphur-crested cockatoos fan out everything they have, one with its crest raised for good measure. No bird is perched. Every one is mid-take-off, mid-landing or mid-display.

Heads and raised wingtips tend to climb into the top third, so on a Lock Screen the clock will often share space with a crest or a feather. The flamingos are the kindest choice there, since their heads sit lower than the cranes' wingtips and leave dark paint above. On a Home Screen the deep blue-green ground runs close to black at the edges, white labels read clearly, and the yellow gives the grid a warm centre of gravity.

It suits birders, painters, and anyone who wants the drama of a museum wing on their phone, minus the gilt frame. Four plates download free in full resolution (Pelican Turning; Crane Rising; White Crane, Wings Up; and Dark-Necked Crane), while the other ten are premium.

About Birds on Oil.

Are the yellow wings true to life?

No, and that is the conceit. Cranes, pelicans and flamingos all get the same canary yellow in their feathers, a painter's liberty that ties the fourteen plates together.

Which birds appear in Birds on Oil?

Red-crowned cranes, pelicans, flamingos and sulphur-crested cockatoos, each painted alone and in motion against the same dark backdrop.
