No. 094, in ten platesBohemian Letters

Ten women with enormous hair, loitering outside country cottages as if the summer belonged to them.

Bohemian Letters is pure pen and ink: solid black pools for hair and boots, fine hatching for thatch and stone, and a parchment ground the colour of milky tea. There is no other colour at all. What ties the ten plates together is a single character type drawn again and again: a tall, languid woman with a cloud of black curls, a loose blouse or a fringed jacket, and an expression that suggests she has somewhere better to be.

The settings are rustic and sunlit. She leans in a stone doorway with a sword at her hip, stands under a wooden eave with a cigarette and a potted plant, poses in flared trousers in front of a tiled farmhouse, smiles beneath a slate roof while birds scatter overhead. In two plates a handful of stray letters drift through the air beside her, which is where the collection gets its name. One portrait swaps the black curls for a paler, wind-tossed mane and a long dark coat on a hillside.

Every composition is a tall standing figure, so the face usually lands in the upper third. The clock will sit over sky or roofline and brush the top of her hair; plates such as The Smile and Stray Letters leave more open parchment up there than the doorway portraits. On the Home Screen the cream background behaves like a light wallpaper, and the big black shapes of hair and clothing give the icons a strong silhouette to sit against.

This room suits lovers of vintage comics, rock-and-roll wardrobes and anything boho. Garden Path and Flared and Smoking hang here free in full resolution; the other eight portraits are premium.

About Bohemian Letters.

Why are they called Bohemian Letters?

Two of the plates have loose letters floating through the air beside the figure, as if a page has blown apart. The rest share the same boho heroine and the same ink.

Are these all in black and white?

Yes: black ink on a warm parchment tone. They read sepia rather than stark white, which makes them softer than a typical monochrome wallpaper.

Is anything locked?

Eight of the ten portraits are premium, at 10 credits each with re-downloads forever, or all included with Unlimited. Garden Path and Flared and Smoking are free in full resolution.
