A heavy stone bull with tall curving horns and a deep dewlap resting on a low base, in halftone sepia
Plate I · Lyre HornsNo. 099

No. 099, in eight platesAncient Nandi Sculpture

Carved beasts at rest on their plinths, printed in the warm grain of an old museum catalogue.

These plates look like pages torn from a mid-century archaeology book: a single dark stone figure, a pale beige ground, and a coarse halftone dot that shows up in the shadows. Colour is limited to parchment, tan and a deep graphite brown. The animals all share the same pose, lying down with legs folded beneath them, which is how Nandi, the bull who waits at the door of Shiva's temples, is traditionally carved.

Four plates are unmistakably bulls. One is shot from below so its head rises against the sky, a hoof hanging off the plinth's edge; another stretches long and low with short forward horns; a third has tall lyre horns and a heavy dewlap; a fourth curls its tail around a two-tier base. The collection then wanders, cheerfully. A slim antelope with swept-back horns rests on a granite boulder, a small hornless beast sits more fawn than bull, a goat-horned figure lies on a slab in acres of speckled paper, and one carving is plainly a hare.

Most figures sit in the middle or lower half with a wide band of empty beige above them, which gives the clock a calm, light ground. Dark numerals read best there, and widgets land on clean paper. The bright background suits a light Home Screen with dark labels; in dark mode, choose the low-angle bull, where the sculpture fills more of the frame.

For lovers of Indian temple art, museum archives and quiet, earthy phones, and for anyone tired of busy wallpapers. Antelope on the Rock and Head Raised can be downloaded free in full resolution, while the other six carvings sit in the premium room.

About Ancient Nandi Sculpture.

Are these photographs of real temple sculptures?

No. They are original artworks made in the style of archival photographs, so none of them depicts a specific statue or site.

Why are some of the animals not bulls?

The series takes the resting Nandi pose as its starting point and then strays, adding an antelope, a hare and a few other beasts. The best bulls are Lyre Horns and Curled Tail.
